By Simon Vostre. At this point in the Danse Macabre of Paris and in the English dance of death we would expect to see the bailiff, "le bailli". This also breaks the alternation between ecclesiastical and lay people. Both points may be explained by the old French magistrate hierarchy with bailie courts and provost courts, where the provosts were appointed and paid by the bailie.
