Vesalius A | Vesalius D |
Initial letter from the 1555 edition of De Fabrica by Vesalius. Little boys are carrying a corpse in a perforated coffin. The coffin is placed in a stream of water to remove soft tissue from the skeleton. This picture makes it clear that the coffin will be placed in the water (the 1543 edition could give the impression that the coffin was about to be interred).
