Berlin: St. Mary's Church, 1876

St. Mary's, 1861 Berlin, Leporello

The end of the dance of death in Berlin. In this lithograph from 1876 by Theodor Prüfer, the fool is standing inside the pot / drum. This was apparently how the mural looked after the hamfisted restoration by Heinrich Fischbach in 1861.

Prüfer points out that this solution is unfortunate for several reasons, one of which is that Rudolph Schick's sketch from before the restoration clearly shows that the person is standing behind the drum. When Prüfer republished "Der Todtentanz in der Marienkirche zu Berlin" in 1883, he had corrected the error and now the fool stands behind the drum. There's a larger version here: Berlin, 1876.
