Guy Marchant, Abbot and bailiff

       Le mort

Abbe: venez tost: vous fuyez:
Nayez ia la chiere esbaye.
Il convient que la mort suivez:
Combien que moult lavez haye
Commandez a dieu labaye:
Que gros et gras vous a nourry.
Tost pourrirez a peu de aye.
Le plus gras est premier pourry.

       Labbe

De cecy neusse point envie:
Mais il convient le pas passer.
Las: or nay ie pas en ma vie
Gardez mon ordre sans casser.
Garde vous de trop embrasser
Vous qui vivez au demorant:
Se vous voulez bien trespasser.
On savise tard en mourant.

       Le mort

Bailly qui savez quest iustice
Et hault et bas: en mainte guise:
Pour gouverner toute police.
Venez tantost a ceste assise.
Ie vous adiourne de main mise
Pour rendre compte de vous fais
Au grant iuge: qui tout ung prise.
Un chascun porteras son fais.

       Le bailly

Hee dieu: vecy dure iournee:
De ce cop pas ne me gardoye
Or est la chanse bien tornee:
Entre iuge honneur avoye.
Et mort fait ravaler ma ioye:
Qui ma adiourne sans rappel.
Ie ny voy plus ne tour ne voye.
Contre la mort na point dappel.

Simon Vostre: Provost
Simon Vostre, Provost

Simon Vostre replaces the bailiff with a provost: le preuost.

This ruins the structure of the dance, which is otherwise characterized by an alternation between ecclesiasticals and lay people. The role change can be explained by remembering that bailiffs as well as provosts would function as judges. The old French magistrate rule had "bailie"-courts and "provost"-courts, where the "provost" was appointed and paid by the "bailie".
