Patriarch and Connétable

Patriarch and Connétable
Guy Marchant, Patriarch and constable

       Le mort

Patriarche pour basse chiere
Vous ne povez estre quitte.
Vostre double crois quaves chiere
Ung aultre aura: cest equite.
Ne pensez plus a dignite:
Ia ne seres pape de rome.
Pour rendre compte este cite.
Folle esperance decoit lomme.

       Le patriarche

Bien apercoy que mondain honneur
Ma deceu: pour dire le voir.
Mes ioyes a torne en doleur:
Et que vault tant donneur avoir.
Trop hault monter nest pas savoir
Haulx estas gaitent gens sans nombre
Mais peu le veulent parcevoir.
A hault monter le faiz encombre.

A patriarch was the leader of an important church. The old church recognized 5 patriarchs in Rome, Alexandria, Antioch, Constantinople and Jerusalem.

Regardless of the exact definition of a patriarch in France, 1425, we notice that he precedes the archbishop and thus have a higher rank.

       Le mort

Cest de mon droit que ie vous mainne.
A la dance gent connestable:
Les plus fors come charlemaigne
Mort prent: cest chose veritable.
Rien ny vault chiere espoventable
Ne fortes armes en cest assault
Dun cop iabas le plus estable.
Rien nest darmes quant mort assault

       Le connestable

Iavoye encor intencion
Dassaillir chateau. forteresse:
Et mener a subiection
En aquerant honneur. richesse.
Mais ie voy que toute proesse
Mort met a bas: cest grant despit.
Tout luy est ung: doulceur rudesse.
Contre la mort na nul respit.

The word "connestable" comes from "comes stabuli", meaning a count from the stable.

Our "connestable" appears between the duke and the knight, so we can conclude that he possessed far more power than a modern constable.
