Holbein: After the Fall
|
Adam and Eve are out in the wilderness to eat their bread in the sweat of their brow.
It's not just "Paradise lost", they also seem to have lost the clothes that God gave them, before exiling them
(Genesis 3:21-23).
The naked couple are visibly embarrassed by Death breathing down their necks.
Holbein (picture to the right) has chosen to let Death assist Adam in tilling the ground, »When Adam delved and Eve span«.
Genesis 3:21, Unto Adam also and to his wife did the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them.
[…]
Genesis 3:23, Therefore the LORD God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken.
Eve
For the sin we have committed
we must go in exile.
Freedom is lost.

Always death comes after us.
