Death takes the baby from the cradle
while the mother / nurse watches terrified. It looks as if Death is dancing with the child.
The accompanying text goes: »Der mensch ist geborn von eim wyb er lebt ein kurtze zeyt / würt mit vil armselikeit erfüllet /
welcher do vß gatt / vnd würt zerknyscht wie ein blum / vnd flücht wie der schatt«.
This is from Job 14,1-2, which in Luther's version sounds:
»Der Mensch, vom Weibe geboren, lebt kurze Zeit und ist voll Unruhe,
geht auf wie eine Blume und fällt ab, flieht wie ein Schatten und bleibt nicht«.
In English:
»Man that is born of a woman is of few days, and full of trouble.
He cometh forth like a flower, and is cut down: he fleeth also as a shadow, and continueth not«.
