The Duchess

H L 1542 N otice, that Hans Lützelburger has cut his woodcutter's mark in the lower, left corner: A conjoined H and L (see picture to the left). Vogtherr has instead written the year 1542.

Variations: Birckmann lets Death set the hourglass on the floor. This is imitated by Deuchar. In Birckmann's picture there's a big hole in the floor (perhaps used by Death for entering the room?)
Anderson has replaced one Death with the Devil.
