The painting portrays
landlord Kallenberg of Schlehendorn, who sat for the artist himself, and sponsored the painting in 1743.
Kallenberg stands at the threshold of
his inn, which as the sign shows, was named "zum Schwan".
Death points towards the ossuary in the nearby cemetery,
which is full of skulls.

The Innkeeper:
Life in this world is only a pilgrim's stand,
Our fatherland is in Salem's golden city,
Therefore, you mortals, do not build your houses so strong;
there you are at home, but here you are foreign guests.
