"Flur" means field: »Flur und Feld«, and a "Flurschütze"s job is to protect the field — i.e. to keep an eye that nobody steals from the crops.
The field watch is employed by a "Hegemahl", »Ein ehrbar Hegemahl«, i.e. the lower court, which is held one or more times a year, generally in the open air, to settle field disputes, field thievery and other field matters.
The painting of the field ranger Hans was paid for in 1748 by this "venerable Hegemahl", and they can be seen sitting behind the curtain.
