The wedding inviter usually invites other people to weddings, but this time he himself is invited to the dance:
»nicht zum Essen!« Refreshments won't be served.

The remark that "the blind and deaf Death does not care for compliments"
(»hält nichts von Komplimenten«)
was inspired by Lübeck's "new" text,
where Death tells the maid:
»Ich halte […] von Complimenten nicht«.
