Death to the abbess

    Zuer Äbtissin.

Hab dein stab, und dich beym Scapulier,
nur gedultig mit mir spatzier,
hast im Closter gehalten guet Regiment,
so wirt dir Gott geben ein seelig end.

    To the Abbess.

I have your staff and yourself by the scapular.(1)
Just walk patiently with me now!
If you have kept a good regiment in the monastery,
then God will grant you a blessed end.

The abbess

    Antwort.

Zu diesem Tanz hab längst mich gerüst'
Mitzugehen mir aber noch zu früh jetzt ist;
Denn mir ist Angst, ein Furcht ich han:
Weiß nicht, ob ich recht tanzen kann.

    Answer.

I have been preparing for this dance for a long time,
but it is still too early for me to go along;
For I am afraid, I have one fear:
I do not know whether I can dance properly.

Here ends the south wall.

scapular . . .: A scapular (from Latin scapulae, "shoulders") is a Western Christian garment suspended from the shoulders. There are two types of scapulars, the monastic and devotional scapular; both forms may simply be referred to as "scapular".
