The orchestra strikes up above the 33 participants in the dance. The text flowing out of the trumpet says: "The sound of my trumpet brings joy or misery forever".
Other dances that also start with an orchestra are Der Doten Dantz mit Figuren, the printed versions of La Danse Macabre and the dance in Kienzheim (of which we unfortunately don't have a picture), as well as newer works like Mors pedibus plaudit by Remondini and the Danish Døde=Dands.
