(1) Matthew 24,36: "But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only." (also Mark 13,32).
(2) Matthew chap. 24, v43: "But know this, that if the goodman of the house had known in what watch the thief would come, he would have watched, and would not have suffered his house to be broken up".

The preacher then goes on to interpret the word "watch". See also the notes about Death as a thief in the night.
(3) Deadly sin: A mortal sin is a voluntary act against the law of God and thus an aversion from God - as opposed to a venial sin that may be remitted.
Mortal sin is often confused with the seven capital sins / vices, namely vainglory (pride), envy, anger, sloth, covetousness (avarice), gluttony and lust.
(4) Death / the preacher is quoting the book "Zwiegespräch zwischen Leben und Tod" from ca. 1484:
God sprack mit synem hilgen munde:
Waket unde bedet to aller stunde,
De dod sendet ju neynnen breff,
Mer he kummet slikende alse eyn deff.
